France beat Argentina 4-3 in the round of 16 of the Russia 2018 World Cup to qualify for the quarterfinals.

The game lived up to the hype and was interesting from the onset.

France started explosively and Kylian Mbappe won them a penalty after he was brought down by Marcos Rojo in the 13th minute.

Antoine Griezmann stepped up and converted the resulting spot kick to give France the lead.

It looked like France they were going to have an easy day but Argentina struck back.

In the 41st minute, Ever Banega slide a pass towards Angel Di Maria who unleashed a fabulous shot from long range.

That ended the game level in the first half.

Argentina went ahead early in the second half.  Lionel Messi's effort deflected off Gabriel Mercado to make it 2-1 in the 48th minute.

France had to step up their game and Benjamin Pavard scored a stunner in the 57th minute to draw his side level.

At this stage France had total control and got their third on the 64th minute, Kylian Mbappe was quickest to react to a rebound and stabbed the ball into the back of the net.

The icing was put on the cake as Mbappe scored his second and France's fourth with a low effort to beat the Argentine goalkeeper.

Argentina scored late in the game, Sergio Aguero headed home a pass from Messi but ended 4-3 with France qualifying at the expense of Argentina.
