Former Asante Kotoko chairman and founder of Fawoade Yasore Secondary/Commercial College, Simms Kofi Mensah has passed on after a short illness.

According to sources, Simms Kofi Mensah passed on a fortnight ago after a short illness in Kumasi.

Simms Kofi Mensah, an electrical engineer by profession, was chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko from 1979 to 1981, with President John-Agyekum Kufuor, as Board Chairman.

The club at the time groomed some talented players like Opoku Nti, Kyenkyenhene, Albert Adade, and Albert Asase, who managed to lift the African Clubs Championship in 1983 for the second time in the history of the club.

Forty-five years ago, the late K. Anno-Barnieh and Honorable Joseph Darko-Mensah made a proposal to the then Chairman of Asante Kotoko, Simms Mensah, to establish a secondary and commercial college in the district to meet the educational challenges of the area.

There were as many as 78 towns and villages at Fawoade-Yasore in the Kwabre District and yet there was not a single secondary school around.

Sources revealed that Mr Simms graciously took up the challenge and in January 1977, he informed the town's Development Committee that he had obtained the approval of the Inspectorate Division of the Ghana Education Service to establish a co-educational institute at Fawoade-Yasore.

The Simms Secondary/ Commercial College was therefore established to admit the first batch of students on Friday, September 30, 1977, at a short ceremony.
