Abeiku Jackson on Thursday made Ghanaians proud after coming 1st in heat 2 of the men’s 100 metres butterfly event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics swimming competition.

The 21-year-old won came 1st in Heat 2 with a time of 53.39s while India's Sajan Prakash 53.45 and South Korea's 53.59 came second and third respectively.

However, his time was not enough to qualify him into the semifinals as he missed it by 2 seconds.

Ahead of the Olympics Jackson said, "I have prepared very well and want to start on a bright note and advance to the next stage."

Abeiku, who also specializes in the 50m freestyle, said having a good beginning would boost his confidence as he is also looking forward to his first Olympic medal.

"I am motivated to do well, and winning an Olympic medal in Tokyo would be historic," said Abeiku.

Abeiku competed for Ghana at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and holds the national records in 13 disciplines.
