During a fundraising event in South Carolina, Hillary Clinton was interrupted by a Black Lives Matter activist, Ashley Williams, who demanded an explanation for statements Clinton made when pushing for tougher crime laws in 1996, and further demanded a direct apology for the spread of mass incarceration.

Williams stepped out of the crowd while Clinton spoke and unfurled a banner which read “We need to bring them to heel,” referring to a specific quote which many interpreted as having racist undertones:

“They are not just gangs of kids anymore. They are often the kinds of kids that are called ‘super-predators.’ No conscience, no empathy. We can talk about why they ended that way, but first we have bring them to heel.”

The interruption occurred at a fundraiser that charged $500 a head, which Williams and her cameraperson payed in order to gain entry. Williams showed the quote and insisted “I am not a super-predator.” In the video of the incident, Clinton brushes her aside with “OK, fine, we’ll talk about it,” claims that “no one has ever asked me” to apologize when pushed, and says that she wants to get “back to the issues” as Williams is escorted out of the building by Secret Service agents.

The (almost entirely white) crowd can be heard booing the activist, claiming that she’s trespassing, and calling her “inappropriate.”

Progressive or proud moderate? For or against gay marriage? In Wall St's pocket or no? For or against Iraq war? Flip or flop?

Back to the issues?!! Thought racial justice was an issue or is it just a tab on your website?
