The ban on some radio stations by the National Communications Authority (NCA) in the country are now to be suspended.

This follows an order by the country's Electronic Communications Tribunal (ECT) mandating the National Communications Authority to lift the ban on some radio stations in the country on Monday 4th December, 2017.

The NCA in September 2017, banned 34 radio stations in the country (including Radio Gold) and fined about 97 more over alleged breach on contract in meeting some basic requirements for their operational licenses.

However, there was concern over the move - particularly, the huge fines imposed on the defaulting radio stations.

Hence, the affected radio stations have long been engaged in various legal measures to seek redress to the communications regulator's decision, including an appeal to the ECT.

Established under the 2008 Electronic Communications Act, the ECT is a  tribunal that allows electronic communications companies, especially the telecommunications and broadcasting firms, to appeal against decisions or orders made by the National Communications Authority (NCA).

Although there have been no response yet from the National Communications  Authority, under the ECT order, at least twelve (12) out of the affected radio stations will have their operating licenses restored.
