The government will kick-off its One Village One Dam initiative in the Kpandai District of Ghana’s Northern region, with the building of 10 units of 300KW Biopower and 80 hectares of centre pivot irrigation dams in 10 selected villages in the area.

In addition, it will also construct a 300KW dairy farm biogas power plant, an irrigation dam and fertilizer production units in some other selected villages across three regions in the north.

The initiative will run on a public-private partnership between the government of Ghana and the Renewable Energy & Environmental Conservation (REEC) Biopower (a subsidiary of Hi-Limit Group).

According to a statement issued by the Chief Executive of Hi-Limit Group, Emmanuel Larbi at the Kpandai District Assembly General Meeting for the commencement of the programme, the project – worth about US$660 million, is expected to generate a total of 132MW of electricity from Biopower plants as well as a 35,200 hectares of centre pivot irrigation dams which will feed an estimated 44 districts in the north.

Mr. Larbi noted that the electricity generated from the Hi-limit dairy farm biogas plants will be distributed to rural villages while also using the biogas effluent (liquid fertilizer) dams serve irrigation purposes in farms across the regions.

The government’s one-village-one-dam initiative is aimed at improving rural electrification, food production, and security, as well as facilitate job creation.
