Minister of Communication and Digitisation, Ursula Owusu Ekuful,  has revealed the government’s intention to launch a self-registration mobile application to assist in the SIM card re-registration process.

She said out of the 40 million SIM cards that are being used in the country, only two million have been re-registered and she said the numbers where lower than what she expected.

She said due to the low registration numbers, it has become important to introduce the self registration app.

"We are serious about deactivating sim cards that won’t be registered at the end of March, 2022. So if you haven’t registered your SIM card, please see your service provider and get it done.

"I think in the next few weeks, we will even release a self registration app which will enable people to register themselves using the SIM registration application. We are working towards that and we hope that it will stair up the figures. I think just about two million people have registered their SIM so far but that’s a little on the low side since we have 40 million registered people,” she said.

The mandatory sim card re-registration process started a month ago and all mobile phone users are expected to register their sim cards again with only the Ghana Card at the various offices of their network service providers.

The process is expected to end in March 2022 and all unregistered sim cards will be deactivated.
