President Nana Akufo-Addo will break his silence on the disputed military agreement between Ghana and the United States of America today, Thursday April 5, 2018.

His address, which will be his first commentary on the military agreement since it caught public attention, will be broadcast live on various local media platforms at 8pm.

The defence agreement was ratified by Parliament two weeks ago amidst strong opposition from the Minority side of the House who staged a walk-out.

Some members of the Minority say the agreement will lead to the setting up of a US military base in Ghana, and subsequently lead to the selling of Ghana’s sovereignty.

The Ghana First Patriotic Front together with the minority in parliament on Wednesday, March 28 staged a protest to register their displeasure on the approval of the Ghana-US military agreement by the Majority in Parliament.

But the Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul insists the details in the 2018 agreement are not entirely different from what was contained in the 1998 and 2015 agreements the then NDC government signed with the US.

Minister of Information, Mustapha Hamid has also said President Akufo-Addo will under no circumstances allow a military base to be set up in Ghana.

Throughout the debate however, the Minority has continually questioned the president's silence on the issue.

Minority Spokesperson on foreign affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in an open letter to the president described his silence as "cold and unusual".

“Your Excellency, I am compelled to write this open letter for your urgent attention due to your rather unusual, strange and uncharacteristic but determined cold silence on the most crucial issue agitating the minds of Ghanaians, thus “the agreement between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Republic of Ghana on Defence Cooperation, the Status of United States Forces, and Access to and Use of Agreed Facilities and Areas in the Republic of Ghana” which your majority Members of Parliament defiantly ratified on the 23rd of March, 2018 to conclude the processes you and your Government initiated,” Ablakwa wrote.
