The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has donated learning materials to welcome new kindergarten and basic one-school entrants as basic schools re-opened for the 2023/2024 academic year.
The items consist of textbooks, stationery, educational aids, and snacks.
The beneficiary schools were St. Mary’s Anglican Primary, John Wesley Methodist, Aayalolo ‘3’ Primary, St. Mary's R/C Basic, Martyrs of Uganda R/C Basic, Dr. H. S. Bannerman/Socco, St. Joseph Anglican Basic, Police Depot Primary School.
Deputy Director of Administration, Samuel Tutuani, who donated the items on behalf of the Mayor of Accra, Hon Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey, said "The first day of school initiative was a momentous occasion in a child's life and should be marked by enthusiasm, curiosity, and a sense of opportunity.
“Our commitment to providing these materials to our new entrants reflects our dedication to fostering a supportive and enriching learning environment for every child in our city," he said.
"Education is the cornerstone of our society, and every child in Accra deserves a fair and promising start in their academic journey. By providing learning materials to schools, we are investing in the future of our city and ensuring that children of school-going age have access to the resources they need to excel, " he added.
He used the opportunity to commend and encourage teachers to continue the good work of nurturing the talents and called on parents to invest in the education of their children.
Head teacher of Saint Mary’s R/C Basic School, Patience Addy in a remark thanked the Assembly for the gesture adding that it would go a long way to motivate and encourage other children to come to school.
She also expressed concerns over the rate of gender parity in the enrolment and was unhappy with the delay in admitting children to the school.
The donations were sponsored by Food Tech Limited, producers of Snappy and Number 8.
