The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the production of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix with immediate effect, following serious quality control failures at the manufacturing plant of Nutrifoods Ghana Limited.
This decision comes after the FDA received multiple consumer complaints and conducted an investigation into the facility, which revealed significant infractions, including poor maintenance of critical equipment and inadequate monitoring systems.
These lapses, according to the FDA, compromised the safety and integrity of the tomato mix products, particularly the canned variants and specific pouch sizes (380g and 1.05kg).
The investigation confirmed that faulty sealing mechanisms had led to contamination and bloating in some pouches, with mold growth observed in several samples, posing serious health risks to consumers.
As a result, the FDA has also initiated a market recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix products and the affected pouch batches.
Notably, Nutrifoods had already been barred from producing the product in January 2025.
The FDA has now launched an internal review to determine whether there were any regulatory oversights that allowed production to resume.
The Authority says any negligence uncovered will be dealt with decisively to reinforce public confidence and regulatory accountability.
The FDA has urged consumers, retailers, and distributors to adhere to the recall directive and ensure affected products are removed from circulation.
