Galamsey task force making gains- Col. William Agyapong

More than 80 suspects have been arrested by the national anti-galamsey task force, Operation Vanguard, deployed a week ago to clamp down on illegal mining.

25 floating machines used to mine in water bodies have also been seized by the joint police and military task force.

Speaking on JoyFM, Commander of the task force, Colonel William Agyapong said the initial screening shows that all suspects arrested are Ghanaians.

President Akuffo-Addo upon the assumption of office launched a campaign against illicit small scale mining, after public outcry on the devastating consequences on farmlands and river bodies. Last week a joint task force of the military and police were deployed to the most affected regions of the country, Ashanti, Eastern and Western,  to enforce the ban on small scale mining in the next phase of the campaign.

The commander of the task force has said some gains have been made in the past says but he lamented how some Ghanaians engaging in the activity do not care about water bodies.

In a related development residents, of Obuasi in the Ashanti region are calling on government to intervene and call the joint task force to order after one person suspected to be an illegal miner was shot dead during a gun battle between the taskforce and some illegal miners.

According to the residents, their activities are not polluting water bodies and they should not be treated those mining whose activities pollute the water bodies.
