Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail after appearing before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

He was granted bail in the sum of GH¢1 million with two sureties, which he has since fulfilled.

Three mining-related charges are expected to be filed against him on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the High Court in Accra.

Chairman Wontumi was invited by the CID on Monday, October 6, 2025, for questioning over his alleged involvement in illegal mining activities.

His appearance came after an ultimatum issued by Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine, who had warned last Friday that the NPP regional chairman would be arrested if he failed to report to the police.

Wontumi’s lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, told journalists that his client was cooperating fully with investigators but cautioned against any attempt to revoke his existing police enquiry bail, stressing that such a move would be “vigorously resisted.”
