The Government has declared Wednesdays as a national day for the wearing of Fugu, also known as Batakari, as part of efforts to promote Ghana’s cultural heritage and strengthen the creative economy.
The declaration was announced in a statement issued by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, and signed by the sector Minister, Abla Dzifa Gomashie.
According to the Ministry, the initiative is aimed at encouraging Ghanaians, both at home and abroad, as well as friends of Ghana, to dedicate every Wednesday to wearing Fugu in its various forms, designs and expressions, complemented by its distinctive accessories.
The Ministry said the move forms part of a broader commitment by government to preserve, promote and celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage while projecting the country’s identity with pride on the global stage.
Beyond its cultural significance, the initiative is also expected to generate social and economic benefits across the value chain. The Ministry noted that increased patronage of Fugu would empower local weavers, designers, artisans and traders, while creating new business, employment and commercial opportunities nationwide.
The statement further expressed the government’s hope that the collective embrace of Fugu would strengthen national unity, stimulate the creative economy and serve as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence and self-expression.
The Ministry encouraged the public to actively participate in the initiative as a show of support for Ghanaian culture and locally made products.
