A man has been shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in the Asawase area of Kumasi, just days after the assassination of a local traditional leader in the same community.

The victim, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was reportedly attacked by two assailants riding a motorbike.

The attackers reportedly opened fire while the man was close to his vehicle before speeding away.

Security has been tightened in the area, with both police and military personnel deployed.

The immediate vicinity of the crime has been cordoned off, and crime scene investigators are gathering evidence. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.

This latest killing comes in the wake of the fatal shooting of Naa Abdul-Malik Azenbe, the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region and head of the Kadi Divisional Area in the Upper East Region.

He was attacked near his residence in Asawase on 22 July by gunmen, one of whom was reportedly armed with an AK-47 rifle. He later died at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The two incidents, occurring within a short distance and just days apart, have raised fears of escalating violence in the Asawase community.

Police have not yet established a connection between the two shootings but say investigations are ongoing.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the latest incident.
