Vincent Gbetorglo, a former prisoner, has been arrested in connection with a violent robbery and carjacking that occurred earlier this year in Accra.

The arrest took place on July 30, 2025, at the Accra Mall after police acted on gathered intelligence.

During the arrest, officers found four mobile phones in Gbetorglo’s possession. One of the devices was confirmed to belong to Vic Martin Obeng, the victim of a robbery that took place on January 1, 2025. The recovery of the phone played a key role in linking Gbetorglo to the crime.

The initial incident took place on New Year’s Day, when Obeng, a taxi driver, picked up three passengers at Madina Zongo Junction around 9:00 p.m. As they neared the Haatso ICGC Church, the passengers assaulted him.

“They attacked me inside the vehicle, covered my face with my own shirt, and tied me up,” he told investigators.

According to police, the assailants forced Obeng into the back seat of his Toyota Corolla taxi, registration number GM 296-16, and stole the vehicle, his daily earnings, his mobile phone, and GHC 13,000 in mobile money. He was later abandoned near Westland.

Obeng filed a report at the CID Headquarters on January 6. Investigators launched a manhunt and followed leads from informants, which eventually led them to Gbetorglo.

When questioned, Gbetorglo said he bought the phones at Kwame Nkrumah Circle but could not identify the seller. Further checks revealed he had previously been sentenced to 40 years in prison by Cocoa Affairs Court 1 in 2011. He was released in 2023 after a successful appeal.

Police say the case may be linked to a wider pattern of attacks on taxi drivers. Investigations are ongoing to locate Gbetorglo’s accomplices and recover the stolen vehicle
