1. Armed robbers strike another cash-in-transit, over GH¢107k stolen
Armed robbers have hit another cash-in-transit in the Western Region town of Tarkwa.
State-owned Daily Graphic reports that the attack happened in front of a supermarket on Monday morning amid sporadic shooting.
“The robbers were said to have trailed the bullion van, which arrived at the Ransbet Super Shopping Market, at about 9 a.m. to collect the weekend sales to the bank. One of the robbers was said to have disguised himself as a shopper with a gun on him.
2. Agbogloshie market gets smart electricity meters to check power theft, fire
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has begun the installation of smart prepaid meters for some traders in the Agbogbloshie market.
The exercise is to halt power theft, prevent market fires, reduce commercial losses and enhance efficiency.
“A technical assessment we conducted revealed that customers had engaged in several types of illegalities in our network at the market. These smart meters will make it difficult for such illegal practices to persist; thus, reducing our commercial losses and enhancing efficiency,” Mr Solomon Tsawe, Korle-bu District Manager of ECG, has said.
3. Israel appoints Shlomit Sufa as ambassador to Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone
The State of Israel has appointed Shlomit Sufa as the new Ambassador to Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Ambassador Sufa replaces Shani Cooper who ended her tour of duty in Ghana in June 2021.
Ambassador Sufa comes to Ghana with twenty years of diplomatic experience after serving in Canada, Switzerland and Ethiopia. Prior to her appointment, she was a participant in the prestigious National Security Program at the Israeli National Defense Collage.
From September 2019 to August 2020, she served as the Minister-Councilor, South East Asia Department in the Asia and Pacific Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Israel.
4. Sam George attacks Netherlands ambassador over visa
Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has accused the Netherlands ambassador to Ghana Jeroen Verheul of not exercising due diligence in processing a visa application for an MP.
The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini had alleged that the Dutch embassy turned down his visa application, suspecting that it was because of his support for the controversial anti-LGBTQ bill currently before Parliament.
"For the Netherlands to ignore my status as an MP with the responsibility to an entire constituency, which was known to them…my valid travel visas to the UK and USA and my numerous previous travel records, which indicate I have never overstayed any visit abroad…my beautiful family, and deny me an entry visa on the basis that, there was insufficient evidence…that I have significant social or economic ties to my country to prompt my return after my intended visit, could only have been deliberately taken to provoke me and also undermine Ghanaian state officials and diplomats,” Mr Suhuyini said in a Facebook post.
5. Police arrest man for allegedly killing his pregnant wife
Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly killing his 30-year-old pregnant wife at Nyankyerenease.
He was arrested at Kodie and will later today be transferred to Accra.
According to eyewitnesses the suspect, Kwame Maxwell stabbed his wife, Betty, after she allegedly accused him of cheating on her.
According to their landlady, the incident happened at the dawn of Saturday after she heard a loud cry for help from the room of the deceased.
She said she rushed to the scene where she saw the husband of the deceased stained with blood and was rushing out of the room.
6. Energy Ministry denies NDC claims about 'rising' fuel prices
The Energy Ministry has issued a release to deny claims made by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) about the recent fuel prices increases.
The release issued by the PRO of the Energy Ministry, Kwasi Obeng-Fosu, denied the claim by the NDC during a press conference yesterday that ex-pump prices have been increased by 7%.
“Ex-pump prices have not increased by 7% as purported by the NDC. As of today [October 19, 2021], Total Energy is the only OMC that has revised its price upwards from GHS6.52 per litre to GHS6.80 per litre; that is a 4.29% increase.
“Other OMCs are yet to announce their prices for the new window. We believe competition will even force this increase further down to a level below 3%,” the release said.
7. 'No Ghana Card, No salary' directive put on hold
A directive by the Controller and Accountant General's Department (CAGD) for all public sector workers to get the Ghana Card by end of November has been suspended.
The CAGD had urged all public workers to register with the National Identification Authority (NIA) for the Ghana Card or forfeit their salaries by December 1, 2021.
However, in a new twist, the department has been tasked to port the names of public sector workers in their existing database onto the National Identification Authority (NIA) platform.
CAGD will subsequently inform the various institutions about any unregistered staff that may exist.
8. Gov’t to list 15 SOEs on GSE to raise GH¢2bn
Government is seeking to raise over GH¢2 billion by listing 15 targeted State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) in order to make them profitable and attractive to investors, Deputy CEO of the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE), Ms. Abena Amoah has said.
The GSE, according to Madam Amoah, has entered into a formal partnership and is currently working with the Ministry of Public Enterprises and State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA) to ensure that the initiative comes to fruition through assessment of the SOEs to ensure that they are investment ready.
Speaking to the B&FT at the 10th edition of Ghana Economic Forum (GEF) in Accra, she said, the 15 enterprises, has been assessed with high prospects of returns on any such investments.
9. Jordan Ayew stars in Crystal Palace stalemate with Arsenal
Black Stars forward Jordan Ayew starred for Crystal Palace as they were held to a draw against Arsenal in a thriller at Emirates Stadium.
The Ghanaian had a hand in one of the goals the Eagles scored in their 2-2 away draw at the Emirates. He provided the assist for Benteke to draw his side level after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's first-half strike.
Jordan Ayew saw 71st minute of action before being replaced by Michael Olise.
10. Shatta Wale breaks silence on alleged gun attack
Popular Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has broken his silence after reports emerged that he was being looked for by the Ghana Police Service over a gun attack on him on Monday, October 18.
The dancehall artiste's personal assistant, Nana Dhope, had alleged yesterday that Shatta Wale was shot by unknown assailants and rushed to a medical facility.
Subsequently, the police said they have launched an investigation into the matter.
Police said they have made contacts with some of his close friends and family members and all of them claim not to have knowledge of his whereabouts or the alleged incident.
