The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana, has declared an open-ended nationwide strike effective today, Friday, September 19, 2025.

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, King James Azortibah, the union directed all of its members across the country to stay away from work until further notice. The strike covers staff in public universities, technical universities, the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Library Authority (GLA), and the Ghana Museum and Monuments Board (GMMB).

TEWU explained that the strike had become inevitable due to what it described as the persistent failure of government and employer institutions to address long-standing concerns of non-teaching staff. According to the union, it had exhausted all legal and procedural avenues before resorting to the strike.

Among the demands of TEWU are the immediate signing of conditions of service for its members, the payment of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) allowance for non-teaching staff of the GES in September 2025, the resolution of grievances related to promotions, and the conclusion of stalled negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

The union warned employers against any form of intimidation or victimization of its members, describing such actions as unfair labour practices. It further stressed that it had shown patience and restraint by following due process as outlined in Ghana’s Labour Act.

TEWU placed the responsibility for disruptions in the education sector on the government and its agencies, insisting that they had failed to act on repeated concerns.

The strike is expected to affect teaching and learning across schools and universities as well as services in libraries and museums nationwide.
