The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested two men for the unlawful possession of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects, identified as Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, his mate, were arrested on December 26, 2025, after police officers on duty intercepted a Kia Granbird bus with registration number GT 5771-18. The vehicle was travelling from Accra towards Walewale, en route to Paga.

According to the police, a thorough search of the bus uncovered two containers carefully concealed in the vehicle, containing a total of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition. Further checks led to the discovery of a bag hidden beneath the driver’s seat, which contained two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet, and a pair of long boots.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. Meanwhile, the bus and all items retrieved during the operation have been impounded as investigations continue.
