Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has threatened to pursue legal action over what he describes as false and defamatory statements made against him amid an escalating dispute over the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
Afenyo-Markin said the attacks were intended to divert attention from questions he had raised about reported losses under the programme and the role of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) in the transactions.
His comments follow a public war of words with GoldBod Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, after the Minority raised concerns over a reported US$1.7 billion loss associated with the DGPP in 2025.
In a statement, Mr Afenyo-Markin said he had faced a series of insults and personal attacks over the past week.
“Over the past week, all manner of insults and personal attacks have been directed at me, apparently in an attempt to impugn my character and divert attention from the substantive questions I have raised,” he said.
He added that false allegations had also been made about his motives for questioning the reported losses and GoldBod’s involvement in the transactions.
“These allegations are entirely false, and I reject them without qualification,” he stated.
The Effutu MP said his actions were driven by his constitutional responsibility as Minority Leader to help Parliament exercise effective oversight over public institutions.
He maintained that he had neither acted improperly nor been motivated by personal interests in raising concerns about the programme.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said he would continue working with the Minority Caucus to initiate parliamentary processes for a full inquiry into the reported losses.
He also said he intended to pursue the appropriate legal remedies over the statements made against him, while insisting that the focus should remain on the transactions, decisions taken and public funds involved.
“On the defamatory statements made against me personally, I intend to pursue the appropriate legal remedies.”
