Former President John Mahama has said, contrary to wrong impressions created by his previous comments, he does not hate the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC).

According to him, everything he has said about the Electoral Commission concerning their work in the 2020 elections is only meant to direct the commission to sit up and perform better in the next elections.

“Assessment of elections are done during, before and after elections so when I am pointing out their [EC's] mistakes, it is not because I hate them,” he said.

The former President said there were lots of shortcomings by the Electoral Commission during the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections that must not be allowed to reccur.

Speaking on TV XYZ on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, John Mahama said he would have stopped criticising the work of the EC if the Chairperson, Jean Mensa, had sat in the witness box during the 2020 Election Petition to answer some questions he had for her.

John Dramani Mahama also said he is ready for an investigation to be conducted about his allegations against the EC if that is what the Commission wants.

He said he prefers an independent enquiry since he is not sure of what the police will investigate.

“If they [the EC] say they want an investigation then I welcome an investigation. But I don’t know what the police is going to investigate. We want an independent enquiry or let's go to ECOWAS. ECOWAS has an independent electoral body so let's let them bring some people to come and do an investigation into Ghana’s election of 2020,” he said.

He said he is ready to testify and swear an oath if such an investigation will be conducted on the elections.
