The flagbearer of the of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has launched a blistering attack on President John Dramani Mahama and his brother, Ibrahim Mahama.

Speaking at Kantamanto Market as part of her Greater Accra tour, Nana Konadu accused the president and his brother of stealing from the national coffers.

The former first lady, who was responding to unconfirmed (and likely false) reports that Ibrahim Mahama had bought a $20 million dollar plane for the president, questioned where the CEO of Engineers & Planners, who she said was unable to repay a bank loan, got the money from.

"How come your brother [Ibrahim Mahama] who was unable to pay a bank loan, managed to get 20 million dollars to buy a plane for you?

"It means that while you are stealing, your brother is also stealing; your family is stealing; your friends are also stealing,” she said.

Nana Konadu has been a fierce critic of President Mahama and has accused him of corruption, but she had, until now, refrained from suggesting that he is a thief.

Her remarks comes days after she was disqualified alongside 12 others by the Electoral Commission (EC) from contesting the December 7 election.

The NDP leader, who was also disqualified in 2012, has pointed to her second disqualification as evidence that the EC's process is rigged against her by elements within the commission who she claims are working on behalf of the government.

She has strongly rejected her disqualification and is fighting the decision in court.

Meanwhile, the EC chairperson, Madam Charlotte Osei, has pledged that the elections will be free, fair and credible.

She told the BBC in an interview Thursday that the commission would not attempt to influence the election in any way.
