Pollster and Editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper, Ben Ephson has warned the opposition National Democratic Congress not to tip any Fante or Northerner as its flagbearer ahead of 2020 election if the party want to regain power.

Speaking on Kasapa FM today April 6, 2017, Mr. Ben Ephson said, the opposition National Democratic Congress in its quest to elect a flagbearer for the 2020 Presidential election must be guided by ethnic preference, hence the NDC must shift their focus from electing a Fante or Northerner as their 2020 presidential candidate.

“Since 1992, a Fante has always been on the ticket of the NDC. In 1992, it was Rawlings/Ackaah, 1996 it was Rawlings/Mills, 2000, it was Mills/Martin Amidu, 2004 was Mills/Mumuni, 2008-Mills/Mahama, 2012-Mahama/Amissah Arthur, 2016-Mahama/Amissah Arthur.

For me NDC towards 2020, if John Mahama is not contesting, they should exclude Fantes and Northerners for the ticket. Western, Central and the three Northern regions should be excluded. If Mahama will contest again, and get the bid as Flagbearer, It’s fine. But if he’s not contesting, the three Northern regions and Fantes should be excluded.”

Meanwhile some NDC bigwigs and supporters want former President Mahama to consider running for the 2020 NDC flagbearership position.

Per Primenewsghana report, The National Organiser and Campaign coordinator for the National Democratic Congress in the 2016 December polls, Kofi Adams has said he will soon lead a campaign to ensure President John Mahama is made their candidate for election 2020 and if he opt not to contest again, I will rally people against that decision.

“If he [John Mahama] decides not to run for elections, I will be disappointed…I will mobilise people against that,”

However, its reported that the former Minister of Trade and industry under the erstwhile Mahama administration, Dr. Ekow Spio Garbrah, is said to be preparing fervently to contest the 2020 flagbearership of the opposition National Democratic Congress.

But according Ben Ephson, Ekow Spio Garbrah’s ambitions begun February 2016, ten (10) months to the 2016 polls, but it is uncertain whether the NDC rank and file would elect him as a preferred candidate for 2020.
