Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, Allotey Jacobs, has revealed his party will scrap August 4th from the country’s books, should they win power.
The country appears to be sharply divided over who founded Ghana, with those from the UP tradition demanding an immediate end to the recognition of Kwame Nkrumah as the sole founder of the country, and instead include others such as JB Danquah and remaining members of the leadership of the United Gold Coast Convention.
President Akufo-Addo, who is calling for a national dialogue on the debate, said it was about time the country ended what he described as “political football†dispute on the matter. He is therefore calling for a bi-partisan approach to the issue.
But the Convention Peoples Party have accused the President of trying to use the proposal to honour his “ancestors†who were opposed to the country’s move towards independent.
Speaking on Accra based radio station Mr. Jacobs said the party will not hesitate to take down the date once they assume power.
“It will start right from the transition period and we shall not waste time in scrapping it,†he said. “We are not going to hide it from anyone- that is our position.â€
The party is expected to commemorate Dr. Nkrumah’s birthday with a march through selected streets in Accra on Thursday.
