Former Trade and Industry Minister Ekow Spio-Garbrah is ready to battle it out with John Mahama to lead the National Democratic Congress(NDC) to the 2020 elections, if the former president decides to contest the position.

Spokesperson Kwaku Tawiah Ampah says reports making rounds that Spio-Garbrah will not contest the flagbearership position are false.

"President Mahama must know that he would be contested if he decides to run for the position,"he said on Accra-based Citi FM.

Mr Ampah added that the former President must be given the courtesy of deciding to run or not but that notwithstanding, he would still battle it out with Spio-Garbrah for the position.

"I can assure you that, come 2018, Dr. Spio-Garbrah would run and we are expecting an interesting contest in the NDC," he stressed.

The NDC led by John Mahama lost the 2016 election to the then opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) under the leadership of Nana Akufo-Addo. Mahama was seeking his second term in office, and the NDC a third consecutive term in power.

Mr Spio-Garbrah joins former NHIA boss, Sylvester Mensah and former Vice Chancellor of the Institute of Professional Studies (UPSA), Prof Joshua Alabi's who have expressed the desire to contest the position.
