Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey will wear a new squad number ahead of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, the club have confirmed.

The former Atletico Madrid star joined the Gunners from the Spanish champions at the beginning of last season and took the number 18 shirt.

He had hoped to get his favourite jersey number 5 on signing for the North Londoners, but it was not the case since it had already been taken by Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who since left for Olympiacos.

With the Greek defender's departure, the Ghanaian midfielder will now get his favourite number 5.

The 28-year-old wears the same number for the Ghana national team and it was also his favourite while with Atletico Madrid.

“I like the No 5 because it’s one of the most important numbers in the team and it is also a lucky number for me,” he told Arsenal.com.

“It’s the number I’ve worn for the past few years, so for me it’s one of the best numbers.”

He is expected to be a key figure for the Gunners in the new season as Mikel Arteta plans to challenge for top positions.

In a recent interview, Partey opened up on his torrid debut season and said he’s still getting used to his teammates but relishes the challenge ahead of the upcoming season.

“I think everybody has seen it, up and downs, we had good times and bad times, but you know this is my first season and I think I had to adapt to how they play, get used to my mates and I think now I’m getting used to them and I know with hard work, everything will be okay for the next season,” Partey told TV3.

“It’s not easy, that’s one of the best leagues in the world and if you want to be there, you have to be able to do everything well, so I like this challenge, and I’m ready to do everything.”

Partey is still waiting on a first goal for the Gunners but does have three assists to his name.

Meanwhile, Skysports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes fans will see the best of the Gunners midfielder next season.

‘It’s been tough for him, he’s had injuries and we have to give people time,’ Redknapp told Sky Sports. ‘Some just come to the league and they just thrive. Others find it really difficult. I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

‘But next year we will see the real Thomas Partey.’
