Ghana will host best ever African Games in 2023 - Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo says Ghana will host the best African Games in 2023.

The President made this statement at the sod-cutting ceremony of a 50,000 capacity Olympic Stadium at Borteyman which will be one of the facilities to host the African Games in two years' time.

Alongside the construction of the Borteyman facility, government will also complete the abandoned University of Ghana Stadium, which will be used for athletics and football.

 "I am confident that Ghana will host the best ever African Games,'' Akufo-Addo said.

The Borteyman facility will cost the nation 145million dollars when completed and will have the following;

• 400-metre 6-Lane Athletics Warm-Up Track with playing field for football; Washrooms
for male and female; Spectator stand for 500 people.
• One Thousand-Seater Competition Swimming Pool, collapsible to Five Hundred (500)
Seater. 8-lane Competition Swimming.
• 8-Lane Warm-up Swimming Pool.
• Five Hundred-Seater (500) Temporary Dome (Handball, Judo, Karate, Taekwondo,
etc).
• One Thousand-Seater (1,000) Multi-Purpose Sports Hall (Badminton, Boxing,
Volleyball, Weightlifting, etc).
• Five (5) Tennis Courts complex including One Thousand-Seater (1,000) Centre Court
(Covered Spectator Stand with a VVIP viewing stand),
• Space for Children’s Playground.

Meanwhile, Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, says hosting the 2023 Africa Games in Ghana will be of immense benefit to the country’s sports development.

Speaking at the official sod-cutting ceremony at Borteyman,  Mustapha Ussif noted that hosting the Games will not only significantly boost the nation’s sports infrastructure in the country, but will also accelerate the country’s sports development, which, he said, falls in line with government’s vision.

“Hosting the biggest sporting event on the African continent; the African Games 2023, falls in line with the vision of His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to promote national development through sports,” Mustapha Ussif said.

“In the wisdom of the President, hosting the African Games will also accelerate the development of sports as well as provide the needed sports infrastructure to quicken such development.”

The 13th edition of the Africa Games, formerly known as the All African Games would involve 54 participating countries and 25 sporting disciplines.

The African Games is a multi-sport event held every four years with the competing nations coming from the African continent.

The 2023 African Games will also serve as qualifiers for the various disciplines for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.
