Hearts of Oak midfielder Salifu Ibrahim wants more protection from referees for players in the Ghana Premier League.

Speaking in an interview the midfielder who is preparing for next season's League with the Phobians said star players make the league exciting and the Premier League Board must do more to protect players from getting injured.

"If we want to have an exciting league we need to protect the star players. Some players come with the intention of hurting you because of how the fans have been hailing you," he said.

Salifu Ibrahim joins a host of stakeholders who has spoken on player protection including Asante Kotoko head coach Mariano Barreto.

Mariano Barreto after his club's matchday 19 game against Berekum Chelsea at the Len Clay Sports Stadium, made a passionate appeal to referees in the league to protect players from getting injured.

This was after two of his players sustained various degrees of injuries in their game against Berekum Chelsea at the Len Clay Sports Stadium, a game they won 2-0.

“Ghana has skillful players and the referee has to protect these players. I like warriors, my team is full of warriors but we don’t kick our opponents. You didn’t see any of the opponent’s player come off injured today," the former Black Stars coach said after the game.

“I have two players injured. The work of the referee is not only to whistle, he also has to protect the players. Now I have a national team player injured, I don’t know how long he’ll be out."

Meanwhile, whether Salifu Ibrahim and Bareto's appeal would be listened to will be adjudged when the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League commences on October 29.

The Premier League will run until Sunday, June 19, 2022.
