Two candidates sitting for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) have died after a tragic road accident in the Upper West Region.

The victims, Taufii Ibrahim and Abdul Khalid, were pupils of Charia Roman Catholic Junior High School. They were reportedly travelling on a motorcycle from Charia to Wa, where they were due to stay for the duration of the exams.

According to reports, the accident occurred on Sunday, May 3, while the students were on their way to join their colleagues ahead of the exams. Due to the lack of an examination centre in their community, the candidates had to travel to Wa, relying on motorcycles, the main form of transport in the area.

Both students were rushed to a nearby health facility. Taufii Ibrahim was pronounced dead on arrival, while Abdul Khalid died later on Monday afternoon.

More than 620,000 candidates across the country began the one-week BECE on Monday, May 4.
