Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of the La Liga on Saturday as a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick saw off city rivals Atletico Madrid at the Vincente Calderon.

Ronaldo opened the scoring on 23 minutes after his deflected free-kick caught  Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak on the wrong foot.

The Portugal forward added a second in the 71st minute through a spot kick.

Atletico defender, Stefan Savic after missing a ball over the top clipped Ronaldo in the box while trying to recover and the forward stepped up to calmly slot it in.

Six minutes later, Ronaldo completed his treble, the 39th hat-trick of his career.

Ronaldo tapped home from six yards after Bale had sprinted past Juanfran, who had moved out of position as Atletico poured more men forward in search of a goal, finding Ronaldo with a perfectly weighted cross.

The win gave Real a four-point lead over rivals, Barcelona who held to 0-0 draw by Malaga
