Wayne Rooney will write himself a new entry in the Premier League record books if he scores in Manchester United's visit to Liverpool on Monday night.

A goal would be the England striker's 88th away from home in the Premier League, taking him clear of Alan Shearer as the competition's all-time highest scorer of goals on opposition grounds.

It has been a turbulent few weeks for Rooney, who has fallen out of form and favour with both United manager Jose Mourinho and England boss Gareth Southgate, and it is likely he'll once again start on the bench.

But should he come on and make a goalscoring impact at Anfield, he'll set one record and edge closer to two more.

The 30-year-old is just three goals shy of equalling Sir Bobby Charlton's United scoring record of 249 and is surely set to break that long-standing mark before the end of the season.

Rooney has already eclipsed Charlton's England scoring record and with his tally of 118 caps, isn't far short of Peter Shilton's all-time England appearance record of 125.

In addition, Rooney has scored six times in United vs Liverpool fixtures, two short of Steven Gerrard, and could draw level if he has a particularly sparkling evening against United's bitterest rivals.

But it is Rooney's record of scoring away from home in the Premier League that is the most pressing concern and he has scored twice previously at Anfield.

Back in January this year, Rooney fired home a late winner as Louis van Gaal's United emerged with a 1-0 success that kept them in touch with the top four.

But it is Newcastle's St James' Park where Rooney has enjoyed the most joy down the years, with eight goals there for United, closely followed by seven against West Ham at Upton Park.

He'd certainly welcome another goal at Anfield, but it is likely to have to come from the bench, with Mourinho expected to favour Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford in attack. Daily Mail
