Michael Carrick opened United’s account but it had to take Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford to ensure victory for Mourinho.
A relieved Mourinho rendered afterwards: 'We deserved to win, clearly, it was difficult, as I expected, but we were totally in control for the first 35 minutes and then the last 45.'
United will face rivals, Manchester City in their next encounter at the Old Trafford.
