Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced the abolition of the COVID-19 levy.
Ato Forson made the announcement during the presentation of the 2026 Budget Statement in Parliament on Thursday, November 13, 2025.
“Mr. Speaker, by abolishing the COVID-19 levy, Government is putting GH₵3.7 billion back into the pockets of individuals and businesses in 2026 alone,” he stated.
This significant injection into the economy is expected to boost household disposable income, lower operating costs for businesses, support job retention, and improve market liquidity.
The removal of the COVID-19 levy forms part of a broader VAT reform package aimed at streamlining the tax system and easing the financial burden on both businesses and consumers. Overall, these reforms are projected to return GH₵5.7 billion to the private sector and households.
“Mr. Speaker, altogether, the VAT reforms are expected to give back GH₵5.7 billion to businesses and households,” the Minister added.
