The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has said the government is addressing recent power supply challenges through a broad upgrade programme targeting key parts of the electricity distribution network.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Minister said the programme focuses on the replacement of ageing transformers, expansion of substation capacity and the rehabilitation of overloaded feeders, particularly in high-demand areas such as Accra and Kumasi.

Mr Jinapor acknowledged ongoing outages and concerns about power quality, noting that a technical assessment had traced the problems to years of underinvestment, poor planning and weak maintenance of infrastructure.

He said as part of the intervention, 2,500 transformers are being procured under an emergency arrangement to boost capacity and improve supply reliability.

In Accra, the Electricity Company of Ghana is upgrading key substations in Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa and Lashibi to reduce localised outages and stabilise voltage.

He said similar reinforcement projects are ongoing in Kumasi and nearby areas, where substation upgrades and expansion of distribution lines are expected to ease system constraints and support growing economic activity.

Mr Jinapor added that the government is also implementing measures to reduce technical losses, improve voltage stability and strengthen fault detection across the network, while enhancing efficiency and accountability within the ECG.

He appealed to the public to remain patient as the works continue and urged the ECG to improve communication with customers by providing timely updates on outages and maintenance activities.

He said the interventions are part of a long-term effort to deliver a more reliable and efficient electricity supply system across the country.
