The Executive Director of National Population Council, NPC Dr Leticia Appiah has defended the Comprehensive Sexual Education programme, CSE saying it will impact children to make the right choices in sexual related issues.

According to her, it will provide the opportunity for children to develop and understand their values, skills, attitudes and insights about sexuality.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) will, from next academic year, introduce sex education into the new curriculum of basic schools to equip pupils to know and experience their sexuality.

At age six, Primary one pupils will be introduced to values and societal norms and how to interact with the different sexes and groups.

The idea has, however, come under intense criticisms receiving bashing from a section of the public, church leaders with many describing it as a deliberate attempt to introduce homosexuality in Ghana

In an interview on Uniqq FM, Dr Appiah said the policy lays a foundation for critical thinking as well as develop positive attitude and orientation towards sexuality

''The programme is to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and attitude including the values they need to determine their sexuality so that they can enjoy their sexuality physically, emotionally, individually and in a relationship. The comprehensive sexual education starts with brand new clarification. I have never seen any manual about engineering that goes straight to engineering without laying the foundation of engineering and that is what the policy seeks to do''.

Dr Appiah also denied allegations that comprehensive sexual education, CSE programme is an imposition on the country. She called for more advocacy to educate the public on the policy.

 About CSE

A Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) will be introduced into the basic schools' curriculum from next year. The overall objective of the CSE is to equip pupils to know and experience their sexuality.

As the pupils graduate to the upper primary, they will be made to study different modules of sexuality that include relationship, friendship, dating and courtship.

The guideline module for 11-year-olds in Primary Six includes fertility, pregnancy-related issues, childbirth and respecting gender differences.
