The Ghana Water Company, GWCL has asked consumers to pay their bills to enable them deliver efficient service.

According to the GWCL, the company will soon start disconnecting consumers for non-payment of bills.

The GWCL explained that the non-payment of bills is affecting the company in the sense that, money generated from payment of bills is used in buying chemicals, changing of pipelines when there is a leakage, fueling tankers to improve productivity and that if consumers fail to do so the company is not able to meet such needs.

Speaking to Radio Ghana, the Communication Director of the Company Stanley Martey said the non-payment of bills is generally affecting its operations and production.

''We expect people to pay their bills and pay promptly because we need the money to enable us serve the same people very well. We have made payment convenient for consumers to pay their bills via mobile money so we expect that people will pay more than they are doing currently.GWCL is not financially stable as at now so its very essential customers will make their payment.

''As a result, we will start going round disconnecting pipelines of recalcitrant customers who have refused to pay their bills over a period. If you're disconnected you'll have to pay your bill and a reconnection fee before youre reconnected. If you owe the GWCL it will be in your own interest to go and settle your bills''.

Last week, western parts of Accra faced water shortage. The affected areas were Sakaman, Odorkor, Dansoman, Agege, Chorkor, Korle-bu, Korle Gonno, Kaneshie, Mallam, Bubuashie.
