KEEA: Assemblyman arrested for engaging in open defecation

The assemblyman for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem municipality in the Central region has been arrested by the municipality's task force, Thursday dawn, for openly defecating at the Elmina beach.

According to the KEEA Municipal Environmental Officer, Alex Kwamena Damptey, the assemblyman along with four other individuals were picked up by the task force in the early hours of the morning in the middle of his bowel movement.

The assemblyman, Clarance Joseph of the Sabre Awene electoral area was is reported to have recently been part of a delegation by the assembly that took part in a training by Zoomlion Ghana Limited which was aimed at equipping assembly members from the coastal areas to help clamp down on open defecation.

The Assembly has hence vowed to prosecute the assemblyman and is also pushing for the assembly member to be kicked out of the local assembly to serve as a deterrent to others.

40 people have recently been fined between Ghc 200 and Ghc 450 by the Elmina magistrate court for engaging in open defecation with one person slapped with a jail term of 12 months for his inability to pay a Ghc450 fine imposed on him.
