The Ministry of Communications has hinted that it is planning with the Education Ministry to lift the ban on the use of Mobile phones in Senior High Schools across the country.

The move will ensure that students are allowed to use their mobile phones as well as other technological devices as learning aids.

“We are currently having discussions with the Ministry of education on the opportunities being given to students to use mobile devices but not just to use them for fun in school but to have curricula loaded unto the devices so that they use as learning aids and not fun tools.”

Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful revealed this at the National Dialogue on digital transformation.

She added, “I think we need to be able to regulate the use of mobile devices, instead of carrying books, all they need is one device that has all they need on it and make sure that they use it to learn,” she said.

In August 2017, the deputy minister of education announced that the Ministry of Education had begun considering lifting the ban for students to bring mobile phones to school as a way to increase their knowledge base in ICT education.

"Some schools don't have computers but the students have mobile phones at home so why wouldn't we allow them to bring the phones to the school to help ICT learning." He said.

He added there are a lot of contents on the internet which students can be taken through to aid their understanding of the 21st-century world driven by technology.

Divergent views ranging from the fact that the lifting of the ban on mobile phones may benefit students academically to whether it may rather distract them from their studies were raised by some citizens.
