The Confederation of African Football(CAF) has approved the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament (AFCON) 2019 in Egypt.

This will be the first time in the history of the AFCON that VAR will be used. Egypt won the bid to host the continental tournament ahead of South Africa in a landslide victory after CAF stripped Cameroon off the hosting right due to poor preparation.

The 32nd edition of AFCON will be staged in Egypt from June 21 to July 15 and it will be the first to feature 24 countries since the decision to expand from 16 teams.

Egypt will host the AFCON for the fifth time, having previously hosted the tournament in 1959, 1974, 1986 and 2006.
