Chelsea could’ve leapfrogged Tottenham and Liverpool at Wolves – but Pedro Neto’s last-gasp winner sealed back-to-back defeats for the Blues as they lost 2-1 right at the death.

The Wolves forward scored in the final minute of stoppage time to snatch all three points for the hosts, who came from behind in stunning fashion.

Olivier Giroud put the visitors in front, with the help of goalline technology, which confirmed his sharp volley had just crept over the line after being fumbled by Rui Patricio.

But Frank Lampard’s side couldn’t cling on and Daniel Podence, the host’s best player on the night, equalised with a fantastic shot past Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea appeared to get away with a point and they were grateful for VAR when it overturned a Wolves penalty given for a foul on Neto, which was correctly ruled a dive on second viewing.

However, there was still time for the forward to have the last word and he got a brilliant winner in the fifth minute of added time.

Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, who cost a combined £120million in the summer, were quiet once again following criticism for their anonymous displays in the 1-0 defeat to Everton on Saturday.

Havertz was withdrawn from the action midway through the second-half and Werner extended his goalless run to eight games as the match passed both Germans by.

Their struggles have been central to Chelsea crashing back down to earth, and that’s now two consecutive defeats following two whole months without one.

Tottenham and Liverpool, who meet at Anfield tomorrow night, will now do so under much less pressure following more dropped points from the Blues.
