Argentina failed to beat World Cup debutant Iceland as they were held to a 1-1 draw in a Group D match of the Russia 2018 World Cup.

The game which looked easy on paper for Argentina was never to be as they worked very hard but could not get all three points.

Argentina started the better of the two sides, dominated play, had few chances until Sergio Aguero brilliantly shot them ahead in the 19th minute.

From that point, it looked like Argentina were going to have an easy goal until a mistake in the Argentine defence allowed Finnbogasson to level for Iceland in the 23rd minute.

They held on till the first half. Argentina started with the same intensity in the 2nd half and their persistence paid off in the 64th minute when they won a penalty.

Five-time Balon d'Or winner Lionel Messi stepped up but missed and Iceland grew in confidence.

Messi has now missed the four of the last seven penalties he has taken for club and country.
