Ghana’s former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has passed away at the age of 76.
She died at the Ridge Hospital in Accra on Thursday.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was widely respected as one of Ghana’s most influential women, a political figure, gender advocate, and founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, which championed women’s empowerment and socio-economic development across the country.
Born in November 17, 1948, she served as First Lady from 1981 to 2001 during her husband’s leadership under both the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Known for her charisma and strong advocacy for women’s participation in governance, she left an indelible mark on Ghana’s political and social landscape.
In later years, she established the National Democratic Party (NDP) and contested the 2016 general elections, becoming the first woman to run for president in Ghana.
