A 25year-old-man has been shot dead by Police for attempting to free suspects in police custody at Senchi in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.

The young man identified as Nyable Mordzifa was part of a mob who stormed the police station in an attempt to free two suspects.

The suspects Victor Hordzi and Patrick Amegbanu who were riding an unregistered motorbike were arrested after they attempted to disarm a policeman at the Adome-senchi checkpoint.

The deceased was shot when the police were firing warning shots to disperse the mob who had massed up at the police station to demand the release of two of their colleagues arrested by the police.

A reinforcement team from the Akosombo division was brought in to help maintain law and order.

The incident occurred around 10 pm on Sunday, September 29,2019. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Atua Government Hospital.

An eyewitness and a resident, Solomon Asare narrated what he saw to Citi FM.

"The police just shot a guy in front of the police station and I think the town people are thinking of a reprisal attack, it's not the fault of the policeman it is the mob who were going to attack the policeman that made him shoot the man, one of the boys intended to attack the policeman earlier, they struggled with the police and held his gun and all that I heard was he had hit one of the Okada boys so in retaliation they just wanted to pass there (checkpoint) so see if he can do something to them which resulted in the arrest of two of them, we had almost resolved the issue when we heard someone shouting that the rest should follow him so that they attack the policeman on duty, I was at the police station when I heard three gunshots only for me to draw closer to see that one person is on the ground.
